Christmas Cookies

Posted by Caroline Hershey

You must have a favorite Christmas cookie that heralds the season and wouldn’t be complete if it were missing on the cookie plate. Ours is the spritz cookie. Thoughts of it conjure up taste bud treats of cinnamon red hots in the center of wreath shapes covered to an inch in depth with sprinkles, thought to be the perfect depth by the grandchildren.

My mother gifted me with hers one year a long time ago and was her look to mean “have fun” or more likely “good luck?” Well, three spritz makers later…each year I pull all of them out and making sure I speak in a soft, gentle voice ask, “which one of you will work for me this year?” They’ve never spoken back except as I twist the knob either forming a perfect cookie or a blob on the end. Perhaps it’s the recipe. Maybe this one will work better. But lo and behold, always returning to the rolled-up scrap of recipes that came with the original spritz maker 50+ years ago. It’s the only one to give that perfect crunch and flavor, that says ah, Christmas is here.

With visions of finished projects and new yarn colors dancing in my head, I wish you a very merry Christmas and an excellent New Year!
