Making Candy and Knitting Socks

Posted by Caroline Hershey

Doesn’t sound like it will work but last night had great results. That’s overlooking the fact that the candy boiled over one time. UGH! But knitted on the socks as I hovered over the stove which took 1-2 hours. Then poured it out onto the counter top for cooling, then kneaded the candy until it became CANDY! I think the kneading was good therapy for the hands after knitting for so long. Trying to make opera fudge which Dan introduced me to in Lancaster PA of course. Today he tasted it, and whether he was being kind or not, said he would have to have them side by side to tell the difference. Isn’t he sweet. But it sure made for a lot of knitting. Will I get all 6 pair done by Christmas? We’ll see. (Hope this sock recipient doesn’t mind fraternal socks.)

Not much more beautiful than this.

Pines & Birds

Posted by Caroline Hershey

Dan was grumbling as we saw hundreds of red wing blackbirds land in our pines by the house. Why grumbling? The resulting cascading shower upon shower of  helicoptering pine seeds coming our way to pile up on deck and porch means much sweeping and next spring many of these sprouting in the flower beds. Is the pine bark beetle coming our way?

flowerWe have moved our Mandeville plant from here to there, all over, this summer, trying to get it to bloom. Not until in the last month moving it to the front of the house did we finally get two blooms. That will be all and hopefully Dan will be able to get it to overwinter and we can start again next spring knowing where to put it.

Christmas Socks

Posted by Caroline Hershey

How many of you are madly making Christmas gifts? I’m making socks for six grandchildren and didn’t realize that they all were going to be red! Hopefully each one is different enough that as they come out of the dryer, it will be easy to spot whose they are. One pair done and these two are in the works. One ruffly cuff down with heels just finished and one toe up (with that closed cast-on from both SoX and KnitXperience!). So easy.
